Mid-Atlantic Fall Jersey Classic Sale Final

A warm sunny day that laughed in the face of the fall season being “official” was the setting for the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Fall Jersey Classic Sale, hosted by Craig Rhein and family in Pine Grove, Pa. A total of 490 head crossed the sale ring, all ages of heifers, and one that calved the night before the sale. An average of $1179 was the final tally.

Huffard Jersey Farms, Crockett, Va., was the final buyer in a spirited bidding battle for Lot 240, JX RFF Vandrell Twinkie {3}, the high seller of the sale. Consigned by Richardson Family Farm, Woodstock, Vt., this JX Faria Brothers Vandrell {2}-ET daughter sold for $5,100. A February 2016 heifer, she has a traditional JPI of 182 and is due in January to sexed JX Crescent Volcano Grant {6}.

Several volume buyers supported the sale, including Sara Halliburton, Tenn., with 50 head; Piazzo Dairy, Buckeye, Ariz., with 54 head; Adrie Vanderjagt, Tx., with 61 head; and Jeff Adams, Wash., with 80 head; and Creek Bottom Farm, Pa., with 114 head. Over 20 buyers from 13 different states distributed New England and Mid-Atlantic region genetics into their herds.

Fall Sales are approaching


Cataloging for the Southeast Jersey Invitational (formerly Dixie Invitational) will begin on THURSDAY, August 10. Consignments, especially any for the tie-up portion, must be turned in promptly.
In this year’s sale, we will be having a tie-up portion featuring approximately 30 head of high quality show prospects and genomic animals. The other portion of the sale will be commercial cattle that will be housed as we have done in the past. Milk cows will be in one group and the heifers divided and housed by age and pregnancy status. Thank you to Her-Man Jerseys and Sunny Day Farm for hosting the sale.

As manager of the sale, JMS wishes to invite you to participate in this volume production sale. The deadline for consignments to the Mid-Atlantic Fall Jersey Classic sale is August 16. The New York and New England area sales were held in the spring only for the 2017 sale season. Cheese plants in Ohio are strongly encouraging their suppliers to increase components, thus creating greater demand for Jersey cattle. The deadline for the Ohio Fall Sale catalog is September 9.

POT O’ GOLD GUIDELINES
Heifers must be born between July 1, 2016 and March 15, 2017. All heifers in the Pot O’Gold (POG) sale will be genotyped, and their dams must be scored at least VG-80%. AJCA will pay for three genomic samples to be nominated for the POG Sale. Samples need to be received at the lab before August 1st to meet the September genomic evaluation deadline and to be in the catalog.

Mid-Atlantic Fall Jersey Classic Sale

Mid-Atlantic BannerThe Mid-Atlantic Fall Jersey Classic Sale sold 291 head on Friday, September 23 in Pine Grove, Pa., for an average of $1,336. Cows, Bred Heifers, Open Heifers, a bull and some baby calves were all sold in the sale hosted by the Craig Rhein Family.

High selling lot of the day was Lot 3, consigned by Billings Farm,  Woodstock, Vt. The springing heifer was sold to Duane Burkholder from Pa., for $2700. Duane also bought Lot 2, a second springing heifer from Billings Farm for $2,300, tied for third selling high lots in the sale.

Sale host Craig Rhein had the second high selling lot of the Mid-Atlantic Sale. Lot 89, a third trimester pregnant heifer, sold for $2,500 to Dexter Knapp of New Hampshire. Dexter was the final bidder on Lot 176 from Dutch Hollow Farms, Schodack Landing, N.Y. She was tied for the third high spot, selling for $2,300.

Twenty-two buyers purchased cattle from the audience and online, from eight different states, including NH, NY, OH, PA, SC, TX, UT, and VT. Adrie Vanderjagt of Sulphur Springs, Tx., was the volume buyer of the day with 63 head.

The Mid-Atlantic Fall Jersey Classic Sale is shaping up to be a good one! Cattle are arriving at Craig Rhein’s heifer facility in Pine Grove, Pa., and a good group of Registered Jerseys are coming together from New England and Mid-Atlantic Jersey breeders!

There are 39 head on fly sheets for this sale, so we wanted to send a quick reminder to look through the Mid-Atlantic Fall Jersey Classic Sale Catalog as well as the Fly Sheets for the Mid-Atlantic Sale.

Pictures and videos of the 300+ consignments of bred and open heifers, as well as some dry cows, will be posted on the JMS Blog and JMS Facebook page over the next few days!
